Art – off the wall is a short documentary series made for Instagram. The aim of this series is to highlight artists around Melbourne, Australia who work in unique and untraditional mediums.
To kick off the series, we are highlighting 5-6 artists in the hopes that it will gain interest and followers to continue expanding into the future. Each episode will only be 1 minute in length and focus on the artist and what inspires them to create work in their given medium.
Each artist will be given 3 posts over the course of a given release week, creating a triptych within the Instagram page. This will allow us to introduce the artist and their medium, creating interest and follows leading up to their final post which will be the release of their doco. In conjunction with the 3 posts, we will be doing Instagram stories of behind the scenes and have the potential to take polls and ask questions of the followers about that week’s artist.
What we will be creating this semester is just a starting point of what this series could turn into. It is mutually beneficial and has opportunities to monetize creating business for the artists through promos and links to personal online stores as well as content creation and project management for us. It has a place in the market to stand alone creating community around the curiosity and appreciation of different art forms but also the ability to exist as a faction of a bigger community or partnership.
Art – off the wall is very relevant today as Instagram is one of the most popular social media networks and continues to grow. It has a strong artistic presence and has just recently released IGTV allowing for vertical content of up to an hour, which is a huge jump to its other video upload limit of 60 seconds. As of now we will be focusing only on the stories and original upload parameters of still images and 1-minute videos. This is due to the research we have done on engagement of the average viewer. Anything over the 2-minute mark loses interest from its viewers so it is good as a challenge for us as content creators to push that boundary and tell these artist’s stories in just 1-minute.
In the future for my personal career, I want to be working in some sort of production role such as Assistant Director, Project manager, or Continuity Coordinator. Because of this, I will be taking on the primary role of the producer in this project but also taking on other roles like camera op and co-editor as we are just working with 2 people. I have interest in roles across the production process even though I feel my strengths align more with the ones mentioned above; so it is nice to have the ability to continue to refine my skills in those areas too while producing Art-off the wall.
